To address these challenges, we have established the Academic Opportunity Process (AOP) to assist students facing academic difficulties. Our goal is to provide you with every opportunity to succeed and reach your full potential. Taking proactive steps and understanding what you should do next is crucial for achieving Good Standing and fulfilling your academic goals!

What is Probation and Dismissal?

Here is what you should know to understand the difference:

Probation

There are two types of probation: Academic and Progress. A student will be placed on probation if any of the following conditions apply:

Academic Probation: A student will be placed on academic probation if your cumulative (overall) GPA is less than a 2.0 after you have attempted a minimum of 12 units on your LACCD transcripts.
Progress Probation: A student will be placed on progress probation if you have attempted 12 or more cumulative units, and the amount of "W", "I" and/or "NC" units reach or exceed 60% of all units attempted.

("W" = Withdraw, "I" = Incomplete, "NC" = No Credit)

Dismissal

A student will be subject to dismissal and a registration hold will be placed their student record if the following occurs:

Dismissal via Academic Probation: A student who is on academic probation shall be subject to dismissal if the student has earned a cumulative GPA of less than 2.0 in all units attempted in each of three (3) consecutive semesters within LACCD.
Dismissal via Progress Probation: A student who is on progress probation shall be subject to dismissal if the cumulative percentage of units in which the student has been enrolled for which entries of No‐Credit (NC), Incomplete (I), and/or Withdrawal (W) are recorded in at least three (3) consecutive semesters within LACCD reaches or exceeds sixty percent (60%).

A registration hold may be applied to your student portal.
Your financial aid disbursement could be impacted.
You may lose priority enrollment status.

You will receive an email identifying the level of probation you are on and the steps you need to take to address the situation.

LACCD Email

We need to ensure that you have a comprehensive educational plan in your student portal. Schedule a counseling appointment within the first 10 days of the semester or as soon as you realize you are on probation or subject to dismissal.

Schedule an Appointment

Complete the steps recommended by a Counselor, which may include completing AOP canvas modules, attending a Life Skills Center Workshop, or completing an AOP contract. Consult the relevant AOP Roadmap(s) to gain a better understanding of what you might encounter.
